Art 1 Final Portfolio

1. Which project was your favorite or most successful this semester?
My animorphosis drawing was one of my most successful works of art. Drawn entirely in colored pencil, this piece has depth, dimension, and most importantly class. I tried to create a richness and saturation using a blend of greens and accents of yellow. For this project, I used Photoshop to change the proportions of an inanimate object, obviously I chose a bottle of Perrier (hello!), and drew the newly developed flat image in my sketchbook. Using a plethora of colored pencils, I added detail, highlights and shadows to the glass bottle, and rendered a 3D image effect. Although I'm experienced with colored pencils, this project did push my abilities and further developed my eye for color and shadows. The purpose of this project was to create a 3D effect through the manipulation of proportion and I would say I succeeded at creating that. In addition, I just really love Perrier, so I'm a bit biased towards this particular piece.

2. Regardless of whether you liked or disliked a project, which one did you learn, grow, or develop the most from?

Although I personally find landscapes tacky and cliche, I think the landscape painting really helped me grow as an artist and further develop my abilities. I've had very little experience, or interest for that matter, with acrylic paint, but after seeing the potential to create beautiful art, I think painting will become a regular part of my artistic repertoire. I usually prefer drawing over painting and sculpting because I like the instant gratification that comes with simplistic paper and pencils, but when painting, patience is vital. I'm not much of a patient person, but I found myself loosing track of time while adding layers of colors and values. Tints and shades from every color group found it's way into my painting. Although I'm not completely satisfied with the end result of this painting, this project really did expand my artistic abilities, thus developing a conceptual foundation towards working with paint. If I were to change one thing about this project, I would have preferred the option to draw a portrait or still life, something I'd actually like to keep.

3. Choose 1 piece of art that you used skills and techniques from previous projects. Discuss your growth as an artist and how you incorporated these skills and techniques to create this piece.

The value study, by far, used the most techniques learned in class. From shading to adding value, this project developed my drawing skills. Until this drawing, I didn't realize the importance of pushing your shades, leaving some areas very light, and some areas very dark. This photograph hardly does this drawing (Or myself, ew I look RATCH) justice. In person, you can see the detail put into the eyes, hair, and nose as well as the soft fading of gradual intensity that brings the entire drawing together. I didn't physically blend any of the areas together, but by changing the pencil hardness and varying the pressure applied to the pencil, I was able to create a seamless, well done portrait. I've always had a knack for drawing, but this project incorporated more than simple sketching techniques. This project required patience, determination, and a lot of hope that I wouldn't end up making the girl I was drawing a hideous troll of a blood sucking monster.

4. Which project do you feel was the least important in learning the concepts taught in this course? Explain.

I did like the concept of this project, but in practice I found the printmaking project to be excessively tired and borderline obnoxious. My printmaking sketch was SO much better than the finished product.
My original sketch had detail and interest, but my finished print looks more poultry than scarlet ibis. I felt creating the print wasn't expanding my artistic abilities, I actually found it to be artistically straining. When gauging the linoleum tile, I found it nearly impossible to add sufficient detail without cutting away too much. Overall, I felt this project was a bit forced and didn't flow with the other art works. I spent my time pondering the thought of gauging my eyes out instead of enjoying the process. Never again will I put myself through the agonizing torture of printmaking... NEVER AGAIN!

5. Choose a piece of artwork where the subject matter reflects you as an artist; one that you have a personal connection to. Explain your choice.

As with most of my art, I like to incorporate my personal interests. For this piece, I developed a glamorous, uber luxe collage, and spray painted the purple threshold of a Louis Vuitton store over top. The contrast between the gold, orange, and red Victorian images and the purple, industrial storefront create a balanced and interesting work of art. Visually and aesthetically pleasing, this work of art captures my love for glamour and luxury, and my devotion to fashion. There were two fundamental layers to this project; the collage and the stencil, both of which played a roll in adding individuality to the final artwork. Developing the collage was not only fun, but it also gave limitless opportunity to further the creative process. The stencil portion of the project, although strenuous to cut out, leant itself to create an individualistic artistic vision. No two stencil projects looked the same, and each work of art represented the artist in some way.
